ADS was a high-end speaker manufacturer in the late 1980s and 1990s. The quality of their speakers makes them highly sought for their reliability, tonal clarity, and mellow, rich sound. They made audio devices for both home and car, which are available on eBay at affordable prices.

You may see hi-fi as a selling point when purchasing speakers. Hi-fi stands for "high fidelity" and is the ability of the speaker to reproduce the original quality of the recording. Not all speakers are hi-fi. Lower quality speakers are not capable of reproducing all of the nuances within a recording. The extra monetary investment in high-quality hi-fi speakers is worth not losing fidelity.

ADS tower speakers are sold as 2-way or 3-way, which is how the speaker handles sound input. In a 2-way speaker system, the sound is separated between a woofer and a tweeter. The tweeter captures and improves the high-frequency sound, and the woofer pushes the mid-range frequencies higher. Both serve to increase the range of human hearing that the sound targets. A 3-way speaker has a woofer, mid-range, and a tweeter, covering a range of frequencies, creating crisper sound quality and separating instruments and vocals in your music more clearly.

The need to use an amplifier with speakers depends heavily on the efficiency rating of the speakers you purchase. High-efficiency speakers use less power to produce more sound so that they can work off the power supplied by the input device in many cases. Lower efficiency speakers can produce quality sound but may require an amplifier to get the most out of them. Anything with a decibel rating (dB) of 90 or more is considered high-efficiency and would, in most cases, not need an amplifier.

Though you can purchase a single speaker and that will provide improved sound quality over stock audio in your car or home entertainment center, a single speaker will not give you the sound coverage that two will. The effect of overlapping waves of sound from paired speakers ensures even distribution of audio and an improved experience. Speakers intentionally matched from the same manufacturer are made to work together. So while you can purchase a single speaker to pair with the one you already have, a set paired by the manufacturer works better.
