Android Flip Cell Phones

How to Shop for Android Flip Phones and Smartphones

When it comes to modern mobile phones, some of the most popular choices on the market carry the Android operating system. From basic smartphones that allow you simple features to mobile devices that essentially let you stay connected to your work and social life every minute of the day, there's bound to be a phone that meets all of your expectations - and then some.

What Are the Differences Between Flip Phones and Smartphones?

There are distinct differences between flip phones and smartphones. The main difference is the lack of smartphone operating system in a flip phone. Most flip phones are fairly basic and you don't have access to most apps; however, they're still an optimal choice for most people, allowing you basic features to keep in touch on the go, such as:

  • Talk
  • Text
  • Camera
  • Calendar
  • Calculator
  • Voicemail options

A great feature about flip phones is their portability and the fact that they easily slip into your pocket.

What Android and Phone Features Are There?

When it comes to Android smartphones, there are many more features than a standard flip phone. Look for both a rear-facing camera and a front-facing camera, allowing you to take selfies. Most smartphones are also capable of 4G speeds, while flip phones may max out at 3G. A smartphone comes complete with RAM (memory), offering you the ability to watch movies and other media, and download apps. Also, look for a strong battery life when it comes to a smartphone. Android specifically offers apps through the Google Play market. Look for other features, such as:

  • HD/large display
  • Video capabilities
  • Advanced security features (such as thumbprint)
  • Quad-core processors
  • microSD card capabilities

Andorid specifically offers several versions of their operating systems and some are more stable or recent than others. Popular choices include Chocolate, Snapdragon and Gingerbread, but there are many others. Popular phone brands include models manufactured by:

  • Samsung
  • Casio
  • LG
  • Kyocera
  • BLU
  • Motorola

What Does Locked or Unlocked Mean?

Users often are confused when a phone is presented as unlocked or locked. What does this really mean? Essentially, you can take an unlocked phone to any provider. Popular providers in the U.S. include services such as:

  • Verizon
  • T-Mobile
  • Spring
  • AT&T
  • Straight Talk
  • Consumer Cellular
  • MetroPCS

However, there are many others. An unlocked phone can be taken to any of the above providers and you can easily sign up for a service. A locked phone typically means that the phone is tied down to that particular carrier and is usually advertised as such. As you shop, if you see the name "AT&T" or "Sprint" in the title of the phone, most likely then the phone is restricted to that provider only.
