Go On a Nostalgic Adventure with Classic Role-Playing Video Games

Some of the most memorable games for many people are role-playing games or RPGs. They feature a variety of gameplay mechanics, but the greatest aspect of notable ones is their storytelling. Not only are players rewarded by deep and fulfilling gameplay mechanics, but they are also treated to memorable and impactful stories they will remember for years to come.

What Is Chrono Trigger?

  • Development: In 1995, Chrono Trigger was developed and published by Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES. It received positive reviews from critics and fans, leading the game to be a commercial success whose influence would span generations of Super Nintendo players and fans. Chrono Trigger was a technical marvel as well because it features alternate endings depending on the choices you make in the SNES game.
  • Story: The SNES game follows the six playable characters who come from different periods in history. The story begins when Lucca and her father create a teleporter and demonstrate it on Marle who volunteers. Marle's pendant interferes with the machine and creates a time portal that sucks her in. Now Lucca and Chrono must recover Marle from the clutches of time, which is a quest that is merely the beginning of a long and eventful adventure.
  • Gameplay: The Nintendo game uses a system called Active Time Battle in which each character can take action in battle only once a personal timer that depends on the character's speed statistic reaches zero. The faster the character, the sooner they can make a move. This was a significant departure from the classic turn-based RPG formula that mixed it up for many SNES fans, which was a move that paid off for the creators.

What Are Some Tips for Chrono Trigger?

  • Get Unlimited Mid Tonics: When you reach the point in the story where you are sent to prison, you have a chance to get unlimited mid tonics by rattling the gate and attacking the guard to escape. Head to the exit and into the room with the Blue Shields securing the upper area. Defeat them and head to the top-right exit toward the bridge. When you get back into the prison and there will be three guards in the room. Knocking them out will cause each of them to leave a mid tonic. Rinse and repeat.
  • Earn Easy Tech Points: Fight the Rubble at the second level of Mt. Woe and go back to the previous level. When you head back up the Rubble will also respawn. Beat it for 1,000 experience and 100 tech points over and over.
  • Unlock New Game+: After beating the RPG, you will see a new option appear in the main menu. Select it and load one of your saved games, and you can play again with all the items you had in the previous game. Beating this mode leads to a different ending.
