Finding Marine and Off-Road GPS Units

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) haven't just changed the way people get to A to B in their vehicles on the roads. Models for boaters and outdoor enthusiasts help with navigation off road too, both in the water and for off-road treks.

What Features Should I Look For?

What and where you are going to use any kind of GPS device will determine the features you need.  Think about whether you need a marine electronics device that covers multiple routes, or one for occasional recreation and entertainment purposes.

  • Types:  There are three main types that offer different degrees of portability:
    • Handheld units are as they sound. These are small units that you can carry with you on different vessels or vehicles and often have smaller screens.
    • Portable units are slightly larger and usually mount on the dashboard of a boat or vehicle.
    • Fixed mount units are the largest. These can often network with your boat's radar and sonar equipment.
  • Chartplotter: The chart plotter in a marine unit allows you to monitor your position, speed, direction and save your routes.
  • Fishfinder: It is probably safe to say that any keen fisherperson will want a unit with a fishfinder. Devices with these features use sonar and transducer technology to locate fish so you can cast your lines and nets at the right depth.
  • Entertainment: Some units have the capability to receive radio station signals and play music and audiobooks.
  • Antennas: Units usually have a built-in antenna. Attaching an external antenna if you are boating will ensure you always have good reception no matter how far from shore.

What Safety Features Are Available?

GPS devices for marine use aren't just about recreation and finding the most fish. The safety features of a GPS device when you are on the water can potentially save you from disaster. Safety features include:

  • Channel Receivers: Inbuilt channel receivers give you options for additional radio communication as and when needed.
  • Sonar Systems: Sonar systems allow you to locate any structures below the surface of your boat for safe navigation.
  • Alarms: The alarms in marine GPS units may include collision, arrival, and low battery alarms to warn you of nearby risks.
  • Man Over Board (MOB): This feature in a GPS allows you to pinpoint a location of any type of incident.
