Starting in 1948, the National Wrestling Alliance or NWA was the top group governing professional wrestling. Championship wrestlers in the National Wrestling Alliance were exchanged among multiple territories, but there was one world heavyweight champion overall. During the next 40 years, an enthusiastic wrestling fan base turned some of the championship wrestlers into stars in high demand across the United States and Japan, creating interest in such memorabilia as NWA wrestling autographed photos.
