Fiber optic cables allow you to carry a high-speed connection over your network so that your computers and servers can stay connected to one another. Fiber optics send signals by using either small lasers or LEDs to send signals over the network. Here are some questions that may come up when selecting SC raw fiber cables for your network.
What is the difference between multi and single mode fiber?- Single mode: This type uses a single strand of glass fiber and is designed to carry a higher bandwidth. Single-mode makes use of laser diode transmitters to send the signal.
- Multimode: This type makes use of LED based equipment to carry the light signal and has multiple glass fibers to carry the signal. There is also a type called POF that uses a plastic type cable that is designed for shorter distances.
- Select a fiber type: The bandwidth requirements and the distance of the data being transferred will determine the type of fiber needed for your network.
- Select a length: You can choose cable lengths between 1 foot and over 25 feet depending on the network.
- Choose a brand: You can choose from brands like CommScope, HP, Leviton, or Panduit. There are also several unbranded and generic options available for use as well.
- Select a connection type: Raw cables will have an open end on one or both sides so that you can select a connection of your choosing. Some connection types include SC, ST, FC, MT-RJ, and others.
- Simplex: This type has a single channel for sending data in one direction. Some formats will be connected with another channel braided together so that they can be packaged into a single wire. This allows each fiber strand to use its whole bandwidth for one direction.
- Half duplex: This mode allows data to be transferred in both directions on a single channel. With this type, the signals take turns transmitting, similar to a set of walkie talkies.
- Full duplex: This type allows data to be transmitted in both directions on the signal carrier at the same time. This channel works similarly to a phone.
Square connectors consist of a push-pull coupling and a spring loaded ceramic ferrule. This type can be used with either multi or single mode fiber optic cables. The coupling receptacles for SC connectors can be either panel mount or free handed. If you have narrow space requirements, there are also 90-degree versions in addition to the straight versions as well. The ferrule used in this type of connection will be 2.5mm in size. One connection is needed for each direction.
