Shift Knobs and Boots for Saturn Ion

The Saturn Ion is a compact four-door sedan that comes with the option of a manual or automatic transmission. The manual version includes a gear shift assembly that can be removed from the center console and replaced when the knob and boot become worn out or damaged. The procedure doesn’t require any tools or experience, and one person can complete it in about 5 to 10 minutes.

The shift knob is held in place by metal threads on the shift stick, and the boot sleeve is attached to the center console by a plastic bezel. Before performing the replacement, park your Saturn, turn off its engine, and engage the parking brake and then follow the steps listed below:

1. Loosen the shift knob by turning it counterclockwise and then remove it from the gear stick.
2. Lift the plastic bezel out of the center console and then remove the boot sleeve from the assembly.
3. Place the new boot over the gear stick and then press the bezel firmly into its place in the center console.
4. Attach the new knob to the gear stick by turning it clockwise until it fits tightly on the assembly.

These items should be cleaned every day after the last time you drive your Ion to remove dirt, hand oil, and other contaminants. Keeping the shift knob and boot clean and dry will help to preserve the condition of your vehicles interior. A mild solution of soap and water should be used to wipe grime and other substances off of the gear shift assembly. Dry these parts with a clean cloth to prevent streaks and stains from forming.

If you drive mostly in the city, your shifter will wear out more quickly than if you drive mostly on the highway. Depending on how often you switch gears while driving, your shift knob and boot should be replaced every 50,000 to 60,000 miles or five to six years. If they become damaged or lost, they should be replaced immediately to help prevent accidents and traffic tickets.
