Sporting News Magazine Back Issues

For more than 120 years, Sporting News has provided coverage on football, basketball, and especially baseball. The publication put out new issues every week from its founding until 2008, when it switched to a biweekly schedule, then to a monthly schedule in 2011. In 2013, the magazine went digital at the request of their subscribers.

What does Sporting News cover?

Formerly tabbed The Sporting News, this publication mainly provided baseball coverage, dating back to the late 1800s. It was created in 1886 and became known as "The Bible of Baseball." Since those times, it has branched out into all the main sports in America, including collegiate football and basketball. It also awards the top sportsman or athlete of each season.

How are the back issues published?

The newspaper, which subsequently became a magazine, ceased creating its paper copies back in 2013 and moved to a mostly digital format. The exceptions to this rule are the specialty distributions that they print to highlight specific seasons to come and fantasy football or baseball seasons. Sporting News has prints from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as collections that date back earlier than that. For example, they offer a bound grouping of issues from the 1920s.

What special issues has Sporting News had?

Many significant events in sports from the past 100 years have been covered by Sporting News. There are classic articles and covers highlighting Hank Aaron, Lew Alcindor's college days, Vince Lombardi, Arnold Palmer, and many other sports stars. Over the years, there have also been several special issues made. A few of these include:

  • The 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl
  • The 125th anniversary of Major League Baseball
  • The first week of Jackie Robinson's career
  • When Stanley Frank Musial was named "Player of the Decade"
  • A tribute issue to Michael Jordan
  • The Patriots' victory in Super Bowl XXXVIII
  • An issue highlighting Tiger Woods' debut
  • An issue highlighting Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s debut
Is Sporting News in color or black and white?

That depends on how old the issue is. The original Sporting News newspaper was printed in black and white, while its magazines are printed in color. Some of their early newspapers feature illustrations in place of photographs as a stylistic choice. Some of the players featured in this way include Eddie Lopat and Duke Snyder.
