Motorcycle Starter Motors and Relays for BMW R1150GS

The BMW R1150GS is a dual-sport, adventure motorcycle that was manufactured by BMW in the years 1999-2004 and 2006. The 1130cc, horizontally-opposed, flat-twin engine and shaft drive of your GS bike require a starter motor with starter relay. Here in this product category, you will find starter motorcycle starter motors and relays for BMW R1150GS and associated accessories for your ride.

What is a starter motor?

The starter motor and relay play an integral part of your BMW motorcycles propulsion system. While the internal combustion engine on your BMW motorcycle goes through cycles of compression and combustion of fuel in its cylinders, it cannot start the cycling of its pistons on its own. Your BMW GS bike relies on an electric motor, called a starter motor, to turn its shaft, drawing fuel into the cylinder and compressing it to achieve ignition and start the first cycle. Once the pistons of your BMW R1150GS are cycling on their own, the inertia of the spinning shaft will keep them cycling and the starter motor is no longer needed.

What does a starter relay do?

The starter relay is part of the electrical system of your BMW R1150GS, which powers the starter motor. When you start your BMW motorcycle by pressing the starter button, a small control current is sent through the ignition switch to the starter relay, which causes the relay to close, sending a power current into the starter motor of the bike. Once the engine of your bike is running on its own, the starter switch is released, which de-energizes the starter relay, opening the power current circuit and weakening the starter motor.

What are signs of a failing motor relay?

If your BMW GS motorcycle wont start, it could be due to several different reasons such as a lack of gasoline or dead battery. There are specific signs, however, that indicate that the starter motor or starter relay in the electrical system could be responsible. If the starter motor on your bike continues to run when the starter button is released, it could mean that the starter relay contacts are stuck closed. If the starter problem occurs intermittently, it may be that excessive heat or debris is interfering with the operation of the starter relay. If a clicking sound comes from the starter, it may be that the battery is low, but sometimes this is due to a damaged starter relay, which may need to be replaced.
