Understanding Power Supply Connectors

A power supply unit (PSU) provides electric power to computer components like the motherboard, add-in cards, optical drives, processors, video cards, hard drives, and memory modules.

To work efficiently, a computer needs sufficient power and the power supply is required. In other words, power supply converts the alternating voltage into a continuous voltage as supplied by the power system.

How do 24-pin connectors work?

Supermicro Power supplies are designed to offer reliability on enterprise level applications. This also includes areas where power is supposed to minimize the highest frequencies on the total cost of ownership. PSU provides power to the PC through several cables with connectors.

Various revisions of ATX require different power connectors. However, computer brands such as HP, Dell, and Apple use standard ATX headers with non-standard pinouts and this may fit well mechanically.

Most PSU enables a user to convert a 24-pin into a 20-pin plug. ATX12v 2.x are motherboards that use a 24-pin connector while ATX motherboards or ATX12V 1.x are motherboards that use a 20 pin connector. These names are used to refer to a motherboard's electrical connection, but ATX can also be used to refer to the motherboard size. For example, an ATX motherboard can be used with an ATX12V 1.x connector.

Is a 24-pin connector compatible with a 20-pin board?

The 24-pin connector can work well with a 20-pin board. The 20 pins are similar but the additional four pins are there to give extra power. The Supermicro 24-pin connectors are designed such that four of the pins are detached. This gives room to plug the connector into a motherboard power connection. When the four pins are detached, the connector then changes into a 20-pin power connector. However, these four pins can be left undetached because they are not necessary for a 20-pin power connected motherboard.

Below is an illustration on how to connect a 24-pin connector to the motherboard.

Purchase an adapter that connects to the 24-pin connector to convert it to a 20-pin connector. This will directly connect to the 20-pin connection motherboard. Hereby, there is no reason to detach the four additional pins.

What should you consider when choosing a power supply?

  • Continuous power - Ensure that the power is provided consistently by the PSU without interruption.
  • Connectors - Your PSU should have connectors depending on the number and the type required by your components.
  • Efficiency - An efficient PSU is determined by the total percentage of output DC power as related to the input AC power.
  • Fans - A lot of heat is usually produced because none of the power supplies can be 100 percent efficient, making it necessary for a power supply to use more than one fan.
