How to Keep Your Data Wherever You Go

Computers don't last forever, but that's exactly what you want your memories to do. One of the easiest way to make sure those memories stay around is to keep your photographs and other mementos on a portable storage solution such as an external hard drive.

How Do You Choose an External Drive?

There are two primary factors to consider when looking for a new portable hard drive solution: Connectivity and capacity. Everything else is secondary to those two aspects:

  • Connectivity:Most portable drives use USB to connect to your computer, and the majority of Toshiba external hard drives are moving towards the USB C connector. This is one area where you must consider not only the nature of the interface, but also the physical connector.
  • Capacity:The more data you have, the more storage you need. For a portable hard drive, that generally means you should look for at least a Terabyte as a minimum, and 2 TB is probably going to be more useful. Photographs take up a lot of space, and the more you have the more thankful you will be for choosing a greater capacity hard drive. Connectivity also links to capacity because the more capacity you have, the faster the connection you need in order to make use of it.

How Do You Use an External Hard Drive?

For most Windows users, external hard drives like the Toshiba Canvio Basics are easy to use. All you have to do is plug it into the computer and it will automatically detect the drive and let you use it for local storage the same way you would the internal drive on your laptop. The operating system in your desktop or laptop sees it as not much different from your existing HDD. Once you have it, there are several ways you can use it.

  • Backups:One way to take advantage of an external drive is to use it for backups. This protects you from drive failure in case your main system drive fails.
  • Data Storage:While you can install software to a removable hard drive, it's a better idea to use it for storage instead. This way you can keep access to your files but don't have to worry about issues when you need to run the software when the drive is not connected.

Maintaining an External Hard Drive

Their removable nature means that you do have to pay attention to some things that you wouldn't think of with a conventional hard drive. First, you must be sure you have both power and data connected. Some drives use the USB connection for power, but others require a separate adapter. You also have to be sure not to disconnect your hard drive while writing to it as that can cause data corruption.
