Some features of USB Type B Female Adapter Converters

The world has become a digital place full of all sorts of different electronic devices that help get us through the daily grind, but those devices will grind to a halt if you are unable to charge the battery on your smartphone or connect an external hard drive to your laptop. USB (Universal serial bus) has been the industry standard for connecting all of our electronic devices sine 1996, and since that time multiple versions and types have been developed leading to sometimes needing a converter to make a connection. With all the available options out there, it is essential to know the difference to avoid picking up the wrong one.

What is a USB type B connector?

Three types of USB connectors come in standard, mini, and micro sizes, including:

  • Type A: Rectangular in design with 4 pins (9 pins for version 3.0), this is the design commonly seen on laptops, charger plugs, and video game systems.
  • Type B: These are square shaped connectors with the same pin count as type A. The mini version of type B is what is used on most smartphones. Other uses for type B include printers, scanners, and hubs.
  • Type C: Similar in size to the micro-A and micro-B types, they sport 24 pins, two-fold rotational-symmetrical connector, and a bi-directional power flow. They can be seen on hardware such as smartphones and media devices.
What are male and female connectors?

Two kinds of connectors need to come together to make electronic data transfer possible. The female, or host, is the socket that sits inside a device like a computer or a smartphone. Female sockets can also be found on cables, but it is not as common as male connectors.

The male, or peripheral, is the piece that plugs into the host socket. These are the most common pieces you will see at the end of a USB cable, but they will not always be the same. For example, a smartphone charger where the end that plugs into a phone will be a mini type B male and the end that plugs into the charger is a standard type A male connector.

What are USB adapters and converters?

There are many situations where you might have a USB cable with one kind of fitting on it but need something completely different to make a connection. If you only have a USB type B male plug on hand but need to plug into a standard type A female socket on a laptop, then using a converter instead of another cable is a great option.
