The adidas Yeezy 700 V3: History and Releases

adidas Yeezy 700 V3

The adidas Yeezy Boost 700 was initially released in 2017 in the popular "Wave Runner" (B75571) colorway. As Kanye's introduction to the "dad shoe" take on Yeezys, the shoe featured a bulky, retro-inspired aesthetic that sneaker collectors quickly came to love. After several colorways and the release of a slightly modified V2 version, the silhouette was due for some drastic changes by the end of 2019.

The adidas Yeezy 700 V3 got released in December 2019 in the "Azael" colorway. Although it retained the 700's model number, the sneaker was much different than its predecessors. It went from having an old-school look to being one of Kanye's most futuristic-looking adidas Yeezy shoes.

Yeezy Boost 700 V3 Price: More Affordable and Accessible

Since the beginning of Kanye West's partnership with adidas, he's had the goal of making his products affordable and accessible. A consistent flow of releases and restocks have been part of that strategy, but the Yeezy 700 model needed a price cut.

At $300, the original Yeezy Boost 700s and Yeezy Boost 700 V2s ventured closer to high-end designer prices rather than the usual under-$250 price sneaker collectors and average consumers typically pay for sneakers. At $200, the new Yeezy 700 V3 was $20 cheaper than the best-selling Yeezy Boost 350 V2, setting it up for success in the market.

The 700 V3: All About the Design

While the sneaker's overall shape remained the same, the Yeezy 700 V3 featured a plethora of changes. It did away with the cut-and-sewn texture and use of traditional materials like suede, leather and mesh in exchange for a monofilament-engineered mesh upper with a glow-in-the-dark RPU cage overlay.

The traditional tongue and lacing system on the previous versions got updated to a hidden lacing system, rope laces and a sock-like neoprene bootie. Later versions of the Yeezy 700 V3 came with a no-tie bungee lacing system.

The intricate and bulky Boost-encapsulated midsole found on Yeezy Boost 700s and Yeezy Boost 700 V2s also got replaced with a smooth EVA foam midsole. The decision to eliminate Boost cushioning from the 700 V3 can be attributed to adidas making the price more palatable for average lifestyle sneaker consumers.

Religion's Influence on the adidas Yeezy 700 V3 Colorways

Religion has always influenced Kanye's creative projects, but after re-devoting himself to God, that influence became more prominent in his sneakers. In 2019, West and adidas released a series of Yeezy Boost 350 V2s and 700 V3s featuring biblical names.

The original Yeezy 700 V3 released was named the "Azael" (FW4980), which translates to "Made of God" in Hebrew. Then, in April 2020, adidas released an all-black colorway named "Alvah" (H67799), which translates to "the exalted one" in Hebrew. The "Alvah" 700 V3s were made available in sizes for adults, kids and infants and were easier to acquire than the "Azael" release.

In August 2020, adidas followed up with a light blue colorway named "Arzareth" (G54850), which translates to "for those set apart" in Hebrew. This model was also released in full family sizing.

In November 2020, the "Safflower" (G54853) colorway was released, featuring different tones of yellow on the engineered mesh. It was initially named "Srphym," which likely translates to "Seraphim" (burning or fiery flying serpent). The colorway underwent a name change after backlash over the presumably negative religious reference.

A month later, adidas released the "Clay Brown" (GY0189) colorway. Originally named "Eremial," it translates to "archangel" in Hebrew. Although no negative connotations were associated with this style, it also received a name change due to the previous backlash.

Collectibility and Resale Value of the adidas Yeezy 700 V3

The original "Azael" colorway is currently and (will likely remain) the most expensive version of the Yeezy 700 V3 due to its limited availability. Unworn pairs have sold for more than $700, and worn pairs have still fetched more than $500.

With each of the following releases, the resale value of adidas Yeezy 700 V3s has gone down. The "Alvah" and "Arzareth" colorways typically sell in the $350 range, while "Safflower" and "Clay Brown" often sell for under $300.

How Does the adidas Yeezy 700 V3 Fit?

The fit of the Yeezy 700 V3 is very snug due to its narrow shape, bootie construction and bungee style lacing system. All these elements limit the ability to loosen the shoe. Whether you consider your feet to be wide or not, it's recommended you go up a half size for a better fit.

Comfort of the adidas Yeezy 700 V3

Although the Yeezy 700 V3 is quite different from the Yeezy Boost 700 and Yeezy Boost 700 V2, there will always be a point of comparison. Since the V3 model doesn't feature Boost technology, it's not as cushioned as the previous models. But as long as you size up, comfort shouldn't be an issue.
